Theological and Spiritual Musings in the Works of Margaret Atwood: The Handmaid’s Tale and Other Worlds
Abstracts are being accepted for an edited volume (under contract) on the theology/ spirituality as is seen and engage with through the works of Margaret Atwood. Abstracts that discuss Atwood’s works with theological perspectives from across the religious spectrum are welcome and encouraged, as are abstracts drawing from the diversity of theological perspectives both traditional and contemporary theologies, including: feminist theology; ethics and moral theology; constructive theology; political theology; ‘death-of-God’ theology; theo-poetics; theologies of race; LGBTQ+/ queer theology, and other approaches of radical theology.
The writings of Margaret Atwood are replete with narratives and characters that lead to explorations of theological topics, some of which include:
- meaning and order in the universe
- mediations on human nature
- Identity and self
- motifs from the Bible and other sacred scriptures
- anthropocentricism and the animal kingdom
- eco-spirituality
- gender and matters of identity (and meaning)
- death and rebirth
- the question of evil
- embodiment
- capitalism
- the question of personal agency/free will
This CFP welcomes abstracts from independent scholars as well as newly-minted and established academics and researchers.
Please send an abstract of no less than 250 words in a Word doc format and a current (but brif) academic cv by April 15, 2026 to greeleyj@sacredheart.edu and jessica.knippel@cgu.edu All inquiries about the CfP should be emailed to the same addresses. We anticipate a December 31, 2026 final submission date for all accepted papers.
