Call for Papers: Theology and Star Trek

Theology and Pop Culture is currently seeking contributions for a potential edited volume from Rowman and Littlefield on the intersection of theology and Star Trek. Essays may focus on any of the television series or films that make up the Star Trek canon. Essays should be written for academics, but avoid “jargon” to be accessible for the layperson.

Potential ideas include but are not limited to:

 Gene Roddenberry and secular humanism; Trelane, Q, god-like beings, and idolatry; Vulcans, Kolinahr, and emotions/passions; Jacob/Kirk wrestles with God; The Measure of a Man: Data, the Doctor, sentience, and the image of God; Cryogenics and/or transhumanism; The shift in DS9to an openness to religion/Bajoran religion; Kahless as messianic figure; The prime directive and missiology; Science and religion; Race; Sex and gender; First contact: Would you baptize an extraterrestrial?; Emissaries and prophets; The Benedict Option and the End of the Klingon Empire; Sanctification/Perfection/Progress of the human condition; 20 years later: A reassessment of Stanley Grenz’s comparison of modernity/post-modernity with TOS/TNG; Parallel universes and theology of death and resurrection; Jericho/Shaka, when the walls fell: Cultural Connections and Bible Translation; Attractional Christianity and Blockbuster Movies: Is There Space for Theological Depth?; Reboots or Spinoffs?: Developing a Theology of Church Planting/Growth; The ethics of the transporter: reconstitution or replacement?; The devil in the dark, the tardigrade, and non-human animals; “We no longer enslave animals for food purposes”: TNG and vegetarianism; The Genesis Planet and ecology.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Please submit an abstract between 300-700 words with CV or resume, including a list of previous publications, to Shaun Brown and Amanda MacInnis Hackney at shauncbrown@yahoo.comand macinnishackney@icloud.comby December 1, 2018.
  2. Notification of acceptance will be by January 1, 2019, and the deadline for drafts of accepted papers is May 1, 2019.
